Tips for Job Hunting

by Jiin, Lee

Including my country, Korea, the unemployment crisis is serious problem in many countries. I often hear that there are some people who decide to commit suicide because of the unemployment. Due to this depressed situation, many college students in Korea study and prepare effective strategies for job hunting. However, it is still hard for job hunters to be fully aware of them.

To help those who have difficulties to prepare the job hunting, here are some advises from career coaches:

1.  Smile —  you’re on camera

These days, many interviews are conducted by the video. As we know the first impression is important, we have to impress the interviewers at the first sight and the best way to do so is to make a smile. Practice to make a friendly smile in front of the camera.

2.  Embrace social media — especially internationally

Some people don’t want to show their social media to protect their privacy, but it is good way to display what you have done for the job and what kind of person you are. Don’t use the social media only for fun. Show people what you are interest in through the social media.

3.  Rent a desk

Many different kinds of people can inspire you. If you want to broad your background knowledge and be more creative, you should meet the people who work in various areas as many as you can.

4.  Right in your own backyard

It is important to meet many people whose jobs are different, but it is also important to keep your relationships you have already built. You have no idea where the useful information comes from. It can be delivered by the person whom you have known 5 years ago.

5.  Join and engage

If you want something, you should try whatever that helps you make it. Knock the door where you want to enter. Try to be engaged in the jobs you want to have.

One of the reasons why I came to America is to learn English which can help me to find a good job. Like me, many young people in their twenties try to do whatever that seems to help their job hunting. In Korea, many college students study a Toeic test, which many companies ask applicants, do volunteer works, take part in many competition and try their best to have experiences as many as they can. To do all these things, they don’t have time to focus on their college studying. Meeting many different people who work in different areas and showing our suitable personality and talent by managing our social media are good way to prepare job hunting. However, the problem is that students already know these are helpful for job hunting but they don’t know where and how to start. To solve the problem, I think that many accessible programs such as lectures for the tips for managing social media and speeches from people who have different careers should be more provided in colleges, so students don’t feel panic and can prepare well for job hunting.
