Simple Tricks to Remember Everyday Things

Hisham Alshehri
Written by, Lisa Davis, July 10, 2013

In these days with the huge amount of information that we receive comparing to the previous generations, it's been difficult to remember everything easily. Lisa Davis explains that some people have difficulty to pay close attention, difficulty to remember names, difficulty to remember wallet place, and difficulty or remember the numbers. Mrs. Lisa explain seven simple methods to eliminate or reduce of the memory forgetting.

The mostly common problem that happen to people is hardness to remember names which can put the person in embracing situations sometimes especially with the people who have an important job such as business men. Psychiatrist Gary Small, M.D., director of the University of California, Los Angeles Longevity Center, suggests that when we meet people usually we don’t pay attention, but the person should make a mental picture of the other person face and his name and connect them. For example, make a pictures of the person while he sitting on the beach and you are calling him. Also, before you leaving the person try to say his name after you said good-bye. Second technique, is especially for people who forgetting always what they want to do. Mrs. Lisa says that try always to use a list as story to write what you want to do or what you want to buy. For example, write a story including the stuff that you want to buy from the grocery. Third problem that mostly everybody facing that is forgetting the password of accounts or of the computer accounts. Try to choose the password that belong to you; for instance, use the name of your dog, your first car, your street name, or the first litters of company name with adding some numbers of your phone, and that will be hard to the hackers to guess too. Moreover, sometime we have hard time to remember where we put the keys or wallet. Best method for that is to put basket in your room or kitchen to put your stuff in it. There is phenomenon that some people forget names of movies, songs, etc. For example if the movie called Dead Ringers try to imagine that you playing with a rings in your finger. Other technique is to know easily where you parked. It is a problem that many people are complaining about, so the good way to remember that is to use look-snap-connect technique. First looks to see what is behind and front your car. Then create a mental snapshot. Last, remember the number with using multiple senses such as, speaking. Last thing, is to remember an important date, use your phone’s calendar to set up an alert for important dates and it will give you notifications when the date comes.

Colleges Are Tested by Push to Prove Graduates' Career Success

By: Won Gyung

According to “Colleges Are Tested by Push to Prove Graduates’ Career Success” by Melissa Korn, graduates’ success in finding well paying jobs is trumpeted by college admissions officers, but the school is usually hard to get some proofs. Many college officials say that taking out employment outcomes to a single standard is not easy because obstacles stand in the way of gathering meaningful figures and conveying them. Beside, others say that they do not believe of tying the nuances of educational success to dollar figures. Federal and state governments are taking steps of their own to measure the value of higher education, yet the efforts are not noticeable. The Higher Education Opportunity Act bars the federal government from making a nationwide database of student records, with opponents quoting privacy and other concerns. The U.S. Education Department is comparing options for a new college rating system which can include graduate employment information.

College Measures, which is a partnership between American Institutes for Research and Matrix Knowledge has helped seven states such as Texas, Florida and Virginia gather information about student record and work to make websites providing employment statistics for graduates. However, school opposes these initiatives because many of efforts are quantify education success. At the same time, college admissions officers realized that using data about graduates’ success in their marketing methods and websites. However, according to Mark Schneider who is a president of College Measures, “college graduates’ are not scientifically sound surveys”. He mourned their horrific answer rates and choice bias, noting that those with good news to report are more likely to respond.

Some colleges argue that there is no clear standard to get statistic results, but some colleges are finding that meaningful information can get easier than their thinking. For example, St. Olaf College in Northfield didn’t expend any staff or make a new fund to improve the response rate to its survey of students on year after graduation to 92% from about 30%. The whole project prices $750, including an online-survey and pizza for student volunteers.

I’m a third grade student in my home university. Although my college clock is temporary stopping because I’m in US now, I should start to consider about my future plan which is what can I do after graduating the university. If some people’s major is a law like me, it is very hard to find a job related to major; law is very specific field. Therefore, some people who graduate my major in my university did not get a job, and it is very hard to know about graduate students. I hope my university also creates a new way to get information about graduates like as in this article.

'Genius hour': What kids can learn from failure

By Jay

Usually, what students learn at school is coming from curriculum and because we learn by curriculum it is limited. To reinforce that problem, there are some movements to try new items. One of trial is ‘Genius hour’, there are more specific information in the CNN.com article, ‘'Genius hour': What kids can learn from failure’’ by Emanuella Grinberg.

There is a school which operates ‘genius hour’. Genius hour is motivated from Google’s 20% time initiative, which allows employees to spend 20% of working hours to their own ideas, and there are some schools which applies this idea, and spends this time as students-led passion projects with focusing on creating and sharing. Genius hour has education purpose to promote students-driven learning, and give opportunity to learn about thinking without any help. During this time students ask their own questions and do their research and make conclusions.

The teacher who is doing genius hours in class is Nicholas Provenzano in Grosse Pointe South-High School in Michigan, and he post student’s projects every week. He started to do Genius Hour because he was inspired by Twitter, and he made commandments, and one of the commandment is “failure is an option” While genius hour proceed, Provenzano tell students, failure is acceptable and allows students to take risks, and learning is from what they fail to do. Traditional learning environments do not allow students to allow taking risk. He learned from this time that students want some freedom to research what they want to, and there are many things they wanted to study about. One hour of the week when failure isn’t just an option, it is giving students opportunity to learn. Proceeding genius hours are important, but it is important to educate parents because the concept of genius hours is unfamiliar to both parents and students. To help parents understand the concept, it is better to inform parents what they did; therefore, parents will support and like genius hours.

There are lots of succeed exampled of genius hour; for instance, student named Emily, first had hard time to decide conclusions with friends, and finally decide to research what brand of sneaker is best. First, she surveyed her school students and teachers, and with teacher’s help she surveyed other school’s teacher and students. After a few months of gathering opinions, they decided to put the sneakers through more empirical testing with the help of their science teacher. They contacted eight brands to gather sample sneakers. From the research, she learned many things about sneakers such as color and style mean a lot to consumers, functions are support are also important especially for runners. From research, Emily felt intimidating because it was first time calling company to request information and write formal letters. Although, it helped her learn brainstorm and interact with others and have confidence in her ideas.
Based on this, it is well know that just following curriculum prevents students to have less creativity and just memorizing facts. I believe students need opportunity to do projects which they wanted to do, and not limited at the curriculum. One hour in one week is not much time, and it will not harm curriculum. It will help students to develop their opportunities. Also, giving more freedom in education will motivated students to study and get interested in going to school

Obstacles to Study as an International Student in U.S

By Abdullah

Many international students have considered U.S colleges and graduate schools as the opportunity for a bright future, and many of those students who are in the U.S or abroad planning to go to the United States soon would face many obstacles. Here are the obstacles and difficulties that international students would face before or after being in the United States:
          1)      English Proficiency: English proficiency is one of the obstacles that educational organizations in United States require international students to prove their English proficiency by taking whether International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). International students are required to take one of those tests which cost between 170 and 210 dollars in order to get a high score on one of them and then apply to a university to get an admission. However, foreign students whose native language is not English would have to study English in one of the English as Second Language schools (ESL school), and that would be hard to find an appropriate school that may teach those English as it is supposed to be learnt. Additionally, the tuition fees in an ESL school would be quite expensive to handle for a long time period that could be more than 15 months, and there is no another choice if a student wants to stay and practice English by meeting native language speakers instead of attending classes in one of those ESL schools because not doing so would let him to be sent back to his country be the Immigration System of the United States.
          2)      Standardized Tests: International students are required to take one or more than one standardized test in order to be qualified to be admitted in an educational organization in the United Stated. SAT is one of those aforementioned tests, and Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is one of the requirements if an American or international student wants to apply for a college. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test that designed for students who want to apply for business school to gain whether master’s degree or PhD. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is designed for undergraduate students who want to attend a science graduate school in order to get a master’s degree or PhD.
         3)      Homesick: Many international students would yearn from time to time to their home country and their families, and that would impact them negatively. Additionally, some of them would be discouraged by homesick to continue studying in the United States, and then they would go back to their home countries without finishing their studies in the United States.

Regardless those obstacles, many international students from different countries have fought those obstacles, and then they have returned to their countries handling their degrees with a pride of that achievement.

Entomophagy; Insect Eating

by Natsumi

Have you ever eaten insects as a part of meals? Maybe some of them simply hate the sight of them; but, insects are now considered as one of important food under this situation of population explosion on earth. May 13, 2013, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published the report which encourages eating insects. On this planet, there are more than 1900 kinds of edible insects; hundreds of them are already enjoyed in many countries.

The countries which use insects for daily foods are 36 in Africa, 29 in Asia, 11 in Europe and the total population reaches about two billion people. We usually hate insects and feel bothered, swat away, and sometimes kill them by insecticide. However, they can be nutritious supplements which include protein, mineral, fiber and fat. Plus, eating insects can reduce the number of harmful insects in safe and healthy way. In addition, from the viewpoint of breeding of insects, much smaller land is needed by compared to breeding cow, pig or chicken. Furthermore, insects can absorb food and turn it into protein more efficiently than animals, so there will be less waste of resources for feeding insects.
Moreover, if eating insects is spread around the world, the new industry is going to produce new employment; especially in the developing country which locates in tropic area, thousands of edible insects live. Their economy will rise up dramatically. There are thousands of merits to start eating insects as dietary food.

Then, which insects are suitable for eating? Today I am going to introduce you three main insects which have been enjoyed by many people already. Firstly, pupas of a moth or butterfly are really popular because of its taste. It is said that those pupas are really juicy; they are popular in Africa, especially among children and pregnant women, who tend to be luck of nutrition, because they contain bunch of protein and iron. Plus, in Central America and South America, the larva of moth which live between leaves of agavea maguey is popular for food; people put it in the spirits made in Mexico, which name is Mezcal.
Secondly, bees are the most famous insects as food. We can eat literally everything of bees; honey is truly useful as a sweetener. The larva and cocoon is tasty if you broil it with salt. The best way to cook the imago is frying. Even the nest is sometimes eaten with honey! However, it is really dangerous to try hunting them by yourself; as you, bees have stringer; they will bite you for protecting their queen if you go close to their nest. So if you want to try eating bees, you should use online shopping or call bee farm.
Lastly, beetles are notable for the taste and nutritive value. Beetles such as longicorn beetle, gold beetle, dung beetle and rhinoceros beetle are eaten in tropical area like a part of Amazon or Africa. We can find many kinds of them easily in fallen tree, inner bark or ground in a forest. Additionally, they absorb the cellulose of trees efficiently and turn it into fat which human can absorb. The amount of protein in beetles is top level by compared to other insects.

Insects are visually awkward, but they must be tasty and nutritious than you are expecting. Try it, and tell me how you would feel!

college sport

--by Shaw
In the article, the writer analyzes the NCAA basketball tournament’s Midwest region situation. I want to discuss about the system about American college sports from this article.
The writer introduces the team which participates in the NCAA tournament one by one. Also, I think this article will be popular so much because of it talks about college sports. The college sport is like an icon in the American culture. I had been watched the UCR soccer team and basketball team’s game. It’s so amazing about the stadium atmosphere. I can’t image it was the college game; it seemed like professional game. Before the game, people who is the alumni or student can get the free blue t-shirt which is the home color of UCR to support the team. In the bread, there also had several games to arouse the audience’s interesting. Of course, the main people in the college is the college students; they are young and emotional whatever they are in the court or in the audience seat; but, definitely, for the college students, supporting their college team in the stadium to beat the opponents is the best moment in the college. Additionally, the sport team’s students also need to prepare their assignment like regular students. If they fail to pass a course, they will be cancel the qualify of sports or scholarship. So they can not forgive their academic duty.
However, in my country, the situation is totally different. The student athlete will be ask to achiever the low academic level to acquire the diploma. Besides, some of them , just as the athlete to enroll in the college, their academic knowledge has a large distance compare with other student. And most of them are like a group; they live together, eat together and train together. They have not a large communication relation which enhance their social experience. Indeed, they like a special group in the college. They come to service for school, yet not for them to learn the knowledge of achieve the personal dream. That is the biggest different between two country’s sport system.
In addition, the America college student has many choices after finishing college life. They can play the professional or like normal student to apply for a job which suit for their major. On the country, Chinese students have many problems in the future job. Although this situation has been changed a lot, there is still a huge gap between the student and social. Most college athlete student can’t play the professional. Because there is another way for train the professional player. The player who is not admit by the coach will recommend to study in the college. So, this way is blocked. And for another reason, because they are limit of job or academic knowledge, they are hard to get the firm’s believe. Most of them will still play the sport item in the factory. It’s not a life time plan.

From these reasons, I think America college sport has a better system compare with Chinese. I hope my country can learn the American experience to improve our college sport.

'There are no answers': Days later, no sign of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

By: Won Gyung

Last July, there was a big accident in San Francisco, the crash of Asiana flight. It was a terrible accident, and people wished that it will happen no more. However, a few days ago, the flight accident occurred again in Malaysia. Not as same as San Francisco accident, this accident is that airplane disappeared without any emergency signal. I hope that the accident will not be related with terrorism, and everyone who are on the board will safe.

The stolen passport: It is confusing enough an aircraft seems to have disappeared without a trace. To plus to the mystery is the news that at least two people on the plane were traveling on stolen passports. The FBI is running those passengers’ thumbprints which were taken at the airport check in Malaysia and were shared with intelligence and law enforcement agencies around the world by the Malaysian government. A majority of the 239 people on the plane were from Asia, according to the airline's manifest. There were 154 people from China or Taiwan and 38 people from Malaysia aboard. Two people who are assumed to steal passports “are not Asian-looking men”, Rahman said Monday.

So far, nothing: The plane disappeared somewhere between Malaysia and Vietnam. After then, many countries such as Vietnam, China, Singapore, Indonesia, the United States, Thailand, Australia, the Philippines and New Zealand sent teams of searchers, and have been finding the airplane around alongside Malaysians to the Gulf of Thailand, part of the South China Sea that lies between several Southeast Asian countries. The focus has shifted to the Andaman Sea, near Thailand's border, after radar data indicated the plane have turned around to head back to Malaysia. Yet the pilot apparently gave no signal to authorities that he was turning around.

Terrorism concern: The passport mystery concerned about the possibility of terrorism, yet officials cautioned that it was still too early to arrive at any conclusions. One possibility for using of the stolen passports is illegal immigration. There are cases of illegal immigrants using fake passports to try to enter Western countries before this accident, and Southeast Asia is known to be a market for stolen passports. The incident has some resemblances to such previous incidents like the 1994 bombing of a Philippine jetliner that investigators learned was a test run for a wider plot to explosive numerous airliners.

Agonizing wait: For the families of the 227 passengers and 12 crew members, the wait has been disturbing. In Beijing, the relatives gathered in a conference room at a hotel complex. More than 100 people signed a hand-written petition that demanded “truth” from the airline. Also, they persuaded strongly the Chinese government to help them deal with Malaysian authorities. A fuller picture of what happened may not become available until finders search the plane and its flight data recorder. But still, that hasn’t happened.

Is the international aid a good way to help poor countries?

by. Won so-yeon

How do you think about the action to help other countries. Do you think it is a economic waste? Here is some summary that include Bill and Melinda Gaes’s opinion about three myths regarding international aid.

‘MYTH ONE: Poor countries are doomed to stay poor.’
Many people think that poverty is a destiny of impoverished countries so they keep their poor state. But in the real world, income has increased in most part of the world. Now, average incomes in Turkey and Chile are similar with those of U.S of 1960. In case of Botswana, they increased income 30 times, Like this, New middle income class was created and they account for over 50% of the world’s population. Moreover, the quality of life has improved. For example, Mexico City was not good at the past. A lot of families don’t have water system, so they walk barefoot and draw water jugs. Also, the workers of Microsoft’s Mexico City office had to send their kids to U.S to check children’s health condition because of the Mexico City’s smog. However, Mexico City was changed now compared to how it was in the past; cleaner air, skyscraper, new road and bridge. Bill and Melinda Gates predict that almost poor countries will get off their poverty by 2035.

‘MYTH TWO: Foreign aid is a big waste.’
Many people think that international aids comprise large proportion of wealthy countries and it lead to the corruption and dependence on other countries of aid-recipient countries. Bill and Melinda Gates acclaim that the international aids is a just small part of the budget of rich countries. For instance, generally, countries spend less than 1 % for foreign aid. In case of U.S, they spend more than 60 times for military. And they concede somewhat the problem of corruption, but, we have to try to reduce the corruption but it is difficult to extinguish. And other many countries have the problem about corrupt government. International aids provide help to make lasting, long-term economic growth and can save a lot of lives. Therefore, it is valuable.

‘MYTH THREE: Saving lives leads to overpopulation.’
Generally, women who live in poor country birth many babies. So, some people worry that if we help the poor country, many children survive so the overpopulation will be a big problem and we will suffer from the shortage of food. This worry brings the idea that we don’t need to save children who will die later. But it is wrong thinking because parents keep small size family if the infant mortality decrease after the poor countries fix economy foundation due to international aid. Therefore, saving lives do not lead to overpopulation.

We live with some prejudice and misunderstanding by hearing wrong or biased stories. Some stories were distorted deliberately for political or social reasons. We can’t sure that the upper opinion of Bill and Melinda Gates is all right. We should strive continuously to discern and accept real and unbiased facts with subjectivity. For in my case, I agree their idea about first myth. Because Korea, my country, suffered to devastation and lack of the necessities such as food, clothing, shelter because of war. However, Korea has developed rapidly and became a nation that supports other countries even though it was a nation that received help from other countries. Our birth place is not our choice. So, in my opinion, we have to strive to make a world that everybody happy.

The Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight

(By Nana) Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, with 239 people aboard, lost contact early Saturday with the airline from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. In my viewpoint, there are some thing we have to realize although the China government claims that we will not suppose to guess the cause of this accident randomly. First, according to the date by the carrier and authorities from both China and Malaysia, cruising at roughly 35000 feet, the plane was about a third of the way into its trip and traversing the South China Sea when Malaysia controllers lost touch and the pilots failed to report to Vietnamese controllers along their anticipated path. Second, Air-safety experts have linked this accident with the 2009 crash of an Air France jet into the Atlantic Ocean en route from Brazil to France; all 228 people on board were killed. The pilots on that that plane also failed to issue any emergency calls and the wreckage wasn’t recovered until two years later, demonstrating the challenge of search and rescue operations. Third, the long-range Boeing 777 has had an exceptional safety record since entering service in May 1995. There have been only two earlier 777 incidents during a flight that results in the loss of the aircraft. The first time was in January 2008 and it result of 45 people injured. Another one happened in July 2013, and there were e passengers were killed. The Boeing 777 used to be regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, however, its’ reputation must be damaged by the second fatal crash in less than a year. So, what could have caused the Malaysia airline plane to crash? As we see, there are two accidents occurred in recent years seem to relation to the foregoing disaster in hand, one is a crash at San Francisco airport last July, as well as another one is the crash landing of a British Airways 777 at Heathrow in January 2008. But the Malaysia disaster is so different with aforementiond two accidents. Both the BA and Asiana accidents occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar during the early stages of the trip.

How to Say "no"

By Jinny

The passage is talking about the situation that when someone requests you to do something for him or her, most people could not say "no", because they feel guilty if they say no to others. According to a research, women tend to more feel difficult to say no to others, and they are more likely to anticipate to feel badly if they said no. They don't want to let others feel angry or disappointed for their rejected. At the end of the article, the writer gave us some useful procedures to follow when we want to say no but do not know how to say.

In my daily life, I can easily be involved in this kind of situation. Some people, including my relatives, my friends, or even friends of friends, often want me help them. For things big and small, easy or difficult to accomplish. Most of the time, saying no is much harder than it should be. So I waste a lot of my time and energy to help others. Although sometimes my dedication could bring me some benefits, for example, when I am in trouble, I can find a lot of people to help me, in the majority situation, I am wasting my life. I think a lot of people have the same problems with me. So it is very important for us to learn how to say no in out daily life.

Firstly, I think before we promise others to do somethings for them, we need to think it twice. According a research, up to 80% problems come from our promise for others without thinking clearly. We often think these things so easy for us, and predict they are easily to finish, while most probably it did not. For example, before I came to the United States, I had a lot of work to do. I need to prepare my stuff, buy many things which I am going to bring here, and search some information about my class here. But my friend wanted me to refine his final paper for his degree. He said that if I didn't help him, he would fail and none of his friends could help him. Although his major is so different with me, I promised him. But after I began to refine his paper, I found that it was much more difficule than I expected. I didn't understand the electronic things and I also did not understand the basic rules. They need to do an experiment for their paper which is so different from our final paper which need a research. So I tried my best to do it and it took me so long to finish it. At that experience, I understood that never promise somethings that you are not familiar with.

Secondly, try to give up the feeling of guilty. In most cases, people feel guilty  when they say no to others or they just don't want to make others angry or disappointed. In my opinion, when others ask for your help, you could say no to them because you are not responsible to their problems and you have right to do so. If you peomise their request and could not finish it, maybe you can cause some trouble for them. So when you don't want to do this kind of thing, you need to say no to them. Actually I think it is a responsible action for both of you.

Alcohol: Medicine Or...

by Natsumi

In Japan, sake has been said to be the best of all medicines just as same as the English proverb “wine is the chief of all medicines.” However, the Japanese proverb continues like “Sake is the best of all medicine, but too much drinking leads to all kinds of disease.” Since old times, Japanese use the alcohol as the tool of making good relationship with friends and co-workers. Drinking makes people feel better and enables to have heart to heart talks. Moreover, it helps people to relieve feelings and stresses; in most cases, people who are drunk tend to overreact to everything. Some start crying, some get mad easily and others keep laughing. The right amount of alcohol makes the atmosphere enjoyable; however, as you know, many people cannot stop drinking at the right amount.

What will be caused by too much drinking? First, you will have a hangover. It brings you migraine and nausea. The splitting headaches last all day, and your brain doesn’t work. Sometimes your stomach also hurts, and if you try to eat or drink something with having hangover, you will be going to feel through up. At the same time, you will be extremely thirsty because your body needs water to break down alcohols in the liver; it seems like that you are in a dilemma. Moreover, you will lost the memory about what you said and what you did. It may scare you so much due to you would overreact by drinking alcohols. The worst thing about hangover is that there is no curel for the hangover. There’re many folk remedies for that, but most of them are medically proved that they have no effect on it. Such a hopeless sickness!
Plus, drinking habitually may cause serious organ disease. Fatty liver is well known as the result of habitual drinking, but there are lots more sickness which can be caused by alcohols. Cardiovascular disease, anemia, cirrhosis, dementia, depression, nerve damage, high blood pressure…and even cancer! How should we protect ourselves by such possibility?

HAMS (Harm Reduction for Alcohol), a not-for profit organization, shows the risk table of drinking. You can determine how much is too much drinking for you by looking this table. The table is based on the NIAAA definitions of published articles concerning alcohol and organ damage. What is the “1 drink”? Well, you can calculate it by using HAM drink calculater. http://www.hamsnetwork.org/limits/
Here’re examples;

A standard drink contains 0.6 oz of pure ethyl alcohol. This is the amount of alcohol contained in a twelve oz beer at 5% alcohol, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12% alcohol, or a one and one half oz shot of booze at 40% (80 proof) alcohol. Proof in the US is always twice percentage. All of the above are Standard Drinks.

A Standard Drink in the United States is defined as 14 g alcohol = 17.7 ml = 0.599 oz.
A British Alcohol Unit is 7.9 g = 10 ml = 0.56 US Standard Drinks.
An Australian Alcohol unit is 10 g = 12.7 ml = 0.71 US Standard Drinks.

Cause of osteopotosis in young women.

by. Won so-yeon

As we become old, a part or an organ of our body gradually atrophy after we reach a certain age level. This can be illustrated by bone deterioration. People lose dense bone density and the loss in bone mineral density can lead to osteoporosis which is disease that has a high chance to suffer a fracture. Generally, in case of women, the density of bone decrease by loss of estrogen in postmenopausal women and men meet with bone loss at 70s on average. However, young patient who has the osteoporosis is increasing because of various reasons such as other illness that patient has, drug, diet, exercising and etc.
Laura Landro covered this issue in her article ‘Risks to Bone Health in Treating Chronic Disease in Younger Patients’. According to her article, patients have osteoporosis because of other reasons such as smoking, excessive alcohol drink, eating, inactivity and illness like anorexia nervosa not aging and this osteoporosis is called Secondary osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) of U.S estimated the number of osteoporotic patients at around 9 million and early stage of osteoporosis at almost 43 million among the American people. Accordingly, osteopenia, the early stage of osteoporosis, is the state that bone density decrease slightly but there is high potential risk to be caught with osteoporosis and fracture. If osteopenia patients leave this matter uncured, the risk of injury and disability increase, therefore, regular checkup is needed preliminarily. If you want to prevent juvenile osteoporosis, then you have to care when you are young before the disease start. Preventive medicine of osteoporosis show good effect depending on patient’s physical condition, so, checking their health is important. Moreover, taking some medicine and disease hinder patients from absorbing nutrients that compose bone, therefore, dietary therapy or alternative treatments is recommended to sufferer instead of taking medicine.
Our life became convenient and the level of life improved thanks to development of science and technology. Additionally, people do not need to move around much because of well equipped transportation system and convenient internet shopping. These advancements provide benefit however there is also demerits. Obesity is growing more and more in these days and people suffer from hormonal disorder or change that menstruation and menopause was moved forward. It can be a fatal change depending on what hormone was affected.
Additionally, the development of new pharmaceuticals also brings side effects even though a lot of patients recovered from their disease because of new medicine. For example, thalidomide was a big issue. Thalidomide is known for treatment of headache and insomnia. Also it was used to relieve morning sickness, but the fact that thalidomide act in the first three months of embryological development. So, a number of thalidomide victims spring up all over the world.
In a nutshell, it is important to contribute for advancement, but we need safeguard to protect from the potential adverse effects of these advancements. And sometimes traditional ways might be good for us rather than seek just convenient things.

Honor student who sued parents returns home --by Shaw

The article,”honor student who sued parents returns home”, introduces a student who lives in New Jersey was left home and she still want her parents pay for her tuition. Then she sues her parents. And the court reject her request, but the court still scheduled a court meeting to consider other situation. In this case, the student refused to obey her parents’ order and moved out of home, but she still wanted her parents pay the money. In the home, her parents told the media their daughter was not courtesy and want do anything which is just she want. From the girl side, she said her family forced her to play basketball to get scholarship. She was not satisfied with her parents.
From the article, this situation may harm to believe, but the conflict between parents and children are constantly existed. In some parts, children think parents are too hard to them; parents are always push children to do something which parents believed is great for children; however, children are refusing for his life are controlled by other people even the people are his parents. Thus, that is why now there are global situation about the relationship between parents and children is nervous.
However, because parents think their purposes are good and they have much more life experience than children, so they believe sometimes to force their children to some certain things is fine. In this term, they may neglect the human nature is free and children have own will. But in the children situation, they can not know they do something which has not any positive effect for his life. Some things which people can do is not benefit for life. People should control his will. Some children may learn experience from some things and then back to regular life routine. Notwithstanding, some children miss their life goal due to they refuse to accept their parents advices.
That is why I saw parents class in UCR extension. I think whatever the children want. If the children don’t have a correct value about life and world, parents shoulder plenty of responsibility of this. Because parents are children’s first teach, and parents are children’s harbor. Parents bring the children come to this world, whatever the children are some kind of strict to company with, parents must take care of their children. To be the parent is not a easy thing, I know my parents raise me hardly. They take care of everything about me. So, in the UCR extension, the parents class is a seriously thing. The course can teach parents basic skill to teach children and how to handle some issues between them.

Back to the story, from the end of story, there won’t be a happy ending of story, but it is a good lesson for every family. Even though children have some excellent education chance and level, parents also should pay attention to their children’s mental. Parents should ensure their children have a positive life. Also, children need to try their best to understand their parents.

Tips for Job Hunting

by Jiin, Lee

Including my country, Korea, the unemployment crisis is serious problem in many countries. I often hear that there are some people who decide to commit suicide because of the unemployment. Due to this depressed situation, many college students in Korea study and prepare effective strategies for job hunting. However, it is still hard for job hunters to be fully aware of them.

To help those who have difficulties to prepare the job hunting, here are some advises from career coaches:

1.  Smile —  you’re on camera

These days, many interviews are conducted by the video. As we know the first impression is important, we have to impress the interviewers at the first sight and the best way to do so is to make a smile. Practice to make a friendly smile in front of the camera.

2.  Embrace social media — especially internationally

Some people don’t want to show their social media to protect their privacy, but it is good way to display what you have done for the job and what kind of person you are. Don’t use the social media only for fun. Show people what you are interest in through the social media.

3.  Rent a desk

Many different kinds of people can inspire you. If you want to broad your background knowledge and be more creative, you should meet the people who work in various areas as many as you can.

4.  Right in your own backyard

It is important to meet many people whose jobs are different, but it is also important to keep your relationships you have already built. You have no idea where the useful information comes from. It can be delivered by the person whom you have known 5 years ago.

5.  Join and engage

If you want something, you should try whatever that helps you make it. Knock the door where you want to enter. Try to be engaged in the jobs you want to have.

One of the reasons why I came to America is to learn English which can help me to find a good job. Like me, many young people in their twenties try to do whatever that seems to help their job hunting. In Korea, many college students study a Toeic test, which many companies ask applicants, do volunteer works, take part in many competition and try their best to have experiences as many as they can. To do all these things, they don’t have time to focus on their college studying. Meeting many different people who work in different areas and showing our suitable personality and talent by managing our social media are good way to prepare job hunting. However, the problem is that students already know these are helpful for job hunting but they don’t know where and how to start. To solve the problem, I think that many accessible programs such as lectures for the tips for managing social media and speeches from people who have different careers should be more provided in colleges, so students don’t feel panic and can prepare well for job hunting.

Carrying Concealed Handguns

By: Beisenbay Mukhanov

There is no shadow of a doubt on the fact that gun control is one of the most controversial issues in the U.S. Recently, even current American president has tried to stick the government control over the sale of firearm. However, because of the strong position of gun lobby, Congress continued to listen to their arguments instead of the points of the proponents of new gun control legislation. Therefore, nowadays many adults may buy handguns and carry them in different public places without any restrictions. At the same time, while some states allow faculty and students to carry firearms on campus, carrying handguns at school is prohibited in others. The following essay explains what was written on the reporter’s blog on February 5th, 2010, regarding to the legalization of guns on campus in Arizona.
The reporter of ABC News on Campus Lindsey Reiser writes on her blog that although the majority of universities in Arizona do not allow carrying concealed handguns, it might be legalized because the state senate is considering the appropriate bill which would give faculty the right to bring guns to school. The author marks that State Senator Jack Harper is the main supporter of this bill, and it is not first attempt to move this bill through the state senate. Furthermore, Reiser notes that Daniel Crocker, Southwest Regional Director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, another supporter of the foregoing legislation, who also argues the extending of this bill to students said that his organization with 44,000 members is one of the largest student rights union in the U.S., and they support any legislation which might extend the right to self defense. They believe that “trained, licensed, and law-abiding adults” should have the right to carry firearms on college campuses as well as on other public places. After that, the blogger provides the other side’s position. According to a list created by the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus, over 100 public schools in 23 states are against the legalization of gun carrying on campuses. Andy Pelosi, director of the campaign, states that campuses are safe places and gun permit in school would only make them more dangerous. In addition, Reiser mentions media law professor Joseph Russomanno who said that allowing faculty to carry handgun would not make current situation better, instead this would make a campus less safe. The author also says that students in Arizona have varied responses. She illustrates the view of a student who fully supports the aforementioned bill and the opinion of another one who asserts that if professors will be allowed to carry handguns in school, students should have the same right too. In the end, the blogger gives information that currently, carrying concealed handguns on campus is allowed in Utah, and at Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia and at Colorado State University.
