Steering teen drivers out of harm's way

By Jay

Now technology, especially mobile technology has been developed very much and it is spread to many people doesn’t matter of age and nationality, and now teenagers always have their cell phone in their hand whatever they are doing. Moreover, it is also true, driving cars are now very common even for teenagers, and teenagers don’t put their phones down, even when they are driving. According to the CNN article by Kelly Wallace, there are many risks while teenagers are driving.
Daniel’s mom had an interview, and said that even her son, Daniel stopped car at the red light and texting, and she will be frightened and worried about her son. However, for her son who is teenager, it will be very hard to put down his cell phone and can’t get through the temptation of the phone, especially when the phone buzzes. On the other hand, adults also do texting while driving. There is a case, that a mother named Teater was talking on a cell phone and ran a red light and killed her son, twelve year old boy. After that accident, she lives by telling people the dangers of using cell phones while driving.
However, there are solutions of texting or calling while they drive. The biggest problem is to overcome a temptation of using the smartphone. Aegis Mobility has invented application to solve this problem. This application can be installed on smartphone, tablet or other handheld device. By installing this application, once people driving about 10 miles an hour, the application will change the device to the safe mode, and obstruct people from texting, checking e-mail and browsing the Internet. The company said the problem is many parents and teenagers don’t know about this software, and another problem is even teenagers know about this problem they won’t install this software to their device voluntarily.
To solve this problem, people have to know about the dangerous. Even they uses handheld or hands-free device while they drive. Using their device while driving, makes their reactions slower, than if you were driving with a 0.08 blood alcohol level, the legal limit. Although, car crashes kill 100 people every day and are the leading cause of accidental deaths in the U.S. Meanwhile, 90% of the crashes are caused by human error including drivers trying to do too many things at once; for example, texting and calling while driving.
Telling teenagers about the dangers by giving them an actual feelings, then teenagers could recognize the risks of texting and calling while driving; for example, showing actual consequences through videos and pictures or telling them the results of using smartphones while driving by victims will be more effective. However, I believe it is more important that parents have to show them the good example. If teenagers grow up by seeing their parents not using their cell phone while driving except emergency situation, it will be easier to give teenagers habits that they don’t do two things at the same time. On the other hand, I think to solve this problem, don’t consider this problem is just apply to the teenagers. This problem is also applied to the adults!
