Alcohol: Medicine Or...

by Natsumi

In Japan, sake has been said to be the best of all medicines just as same as the English proverb “wine is the chief of all medicines.” However, the Japanese proverb continues like “Sake is the best of all medicine, but too much drinking leads to all kinds of disease.” Since old times, Japanese use the alcohol as the tool of making good relationship with friends and co-workers. Drinking makes people feel better and enables to have heart to heart talks. Moreover, it helps people to relieve feelings and stresses; in most cases, people who are drunk tend to overreact to everything. Some start crying, some get mad easily and others keep laughing. The right amount of alcohol makes the atmosphere enjoyable; however, as you know, many people cannot stop drinking at the right amount.

What will be caused by too much drinking? First, you will have a hangover. It brings you migraine and nausea. The splitting headaches last all day, and your brain doesn’t work. Sometimes your stomach also hurts, and if you try to eat or drink something with having hangover, you will be going to feel through up. At the same time, you will be extremely thirsty because your body needs water to break down alcohols in the liver; it seems like that you are in a dilemma. Moreover, you will lost the memory about what you said and what you did. It may scare you so much due to you would overreact by drinking alcohols. The worst thing about hangover is that there is no curel for the hangover. There’re many folk remedies for that, but most of them are medically proved that they have no effect on it. Such a hopeless sickness!
Plus, drinking habitually may cause serious organ disease. Fatty liver is well known as the result of habitual drinking, but there are lots more sickness which can be caused by alcohols. Cardiovascular disease, anemia, cirrhosis, dementia, depression, nerve damage, high blood pressure…and even cancer! How should we protect ourselves by such possibility?

HAMS (Harm Reduction for Alcohol), a not-for profit organization, shows the risk table of drinking. You can determine how much is too much drinking for you by looking this table. The table is based on the NIAAA definitions of published articles concerning alcohol and organ damage. What is the “1 drink”? Well, you can calculate it by using HAM drink calculater. http://www.hamsnetwork.org/limits/
Here’re examples;

A standard drink contains 0.6 oz of pure ethyl alcohol. This is the amount of alcohol contained in a twelve oz beer at 5% alcohol, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12% alcohol, or a one and one half oz shot of booze at 40% (80 proof) alcohol. Proof in the US is always twice percentage. All of the above are Standard Drinks.

A Standard Drink in the United States is defined as 14 g alcohol = 17.7 ml = 0.599 oz.
A British Alcohol Unit is 7.9 g = 10 ml = 0.56 US Standard Drinks.
An Australian Alcohol unit is 10 g = 12.7 ml = 0.71 US Standard Drinks.
