Go offline for 'National Day of Unplugging'

By Jay

There are many different kinds of devices which we can connect with internet; for instance, smartphone, tablet and laptop. With these devices, people cannot put down their devices and concentrate to other works; for example, talking with friends, working and studying. Based on this phenomenon, there are some movements to get away from many mobile devices. The article form CNN.com by Heather Kelly, shows how mobile devices affects and what the movement to get away from them is.

Number of people is increasing who wants to take a break from their electronic devices. To help people to take a break from their devices, national nonprofit group reboot launched ‘national day of unplugging’. To participate, people have to sign a pledge on the event’s website and upload their own photo with saying why they decided to unplug. People who participate encouraged putting away their smartphones, tablets and other devices which are internet connected devices. It starts from sunset Friday to sundown Saturday. During this time these people are persuaded to stay in nature, reconnecting with family or friends, concentration on their project and uninterrupted night’s sleep. There is research called attention-restoration theory. The result of this result tell us that after people have some rest, people focus more on their work. The rest could be simple such as waking or looking at photos of nature can rest people’s attention spans and reduce stress.

To step back from electronic devices, there are some tips. Firstly, replace the phone on your beside with an alarm clock. This way, when you would not find their phone to check the time and the light of the phone won’t interrupt sleeping. Second, set goals and schedule times when you think it would be beneficial to go without phone. It is important to set right time to do unplug. People unconsciously pick their electronic devices when they get bored from conversations or when they have to wait in the line to get in somewhere. Set time when you are alone and think about what you might be missing in those moments. Lastly, tell around like works, friends and families that you will turn all the devices and don’t expect the responses. If you don’t tell your friends, families and fellow worker then they will be frustrated by having no answers from you.

It is true that people are addicted with smartphones, and we can see this phenomenon anywhere. When we are even with friends, we check, play with phones and send messages to other friends. Moreover, when we are with family for dinner, we send messages to friends or play games with smartphones; therefore, there are no conversations. To reduce these situations, we need some solutions. I believe ‘National Day of Unplugging’ is nice opportunity to start. Get unplug one day, and when you get used to it, there will be no difficulty to unplug; therefore, they can control the situations and will have more conversations with others. Let’s spread this habit to our close people.
