A Pair of Stockings

By Nana Zheng

This is a micro fiction wrote by Kate Chopin, the writer described that a poor young housewife how to deal with her unexpected money that she pick up on the street. To begin with, she thought about it carefully and finally decided to spend all the 15 dollars she found to buy some nice stuff for her family members. She planned to buy a pair of shoes for her daughter, and buy some clothes to make shirt as a gift to her boys, also she hope there will be enough money left to buy two stockings per child. However, after she arrived the department store, a kind of wired force pushed her to buy a pair of black silk stocking for herself instead her for her children. Then, she bought her boots and gloves without control. Before went back home, she went to an expensive restaurant to have a good dinner as an elegant lady. At the end, she took the subway to home with her new dress. She was really having a sense of satisfaction.

In my opinion, the main character in this fiction, Mrs.Sommers, is a typical sacrifice of the conservative society. At that time females are lower positions compared with males. For them, the most relevant part of life is their family,  they have to use up all the life to take care their husband and kids. It is hard for them to own selfhood. That is why the first thought of her is how to use this money to buy some good stuff for her children. Nevertheless, Mrs.Sommers bought all the stuff for herself. "She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and free her of responsibility." What kind of machine-like force? I think it should be her deep pride in her mind. At that old time, she lacked of possession of self-assertion as most housewives. In the end, she felt a sense of satisfaction she never had just because she spent 15 dollars on her personal stuff!
